Fuse Blocks for Water-Cooled TIG Torches

This article is for users who are welding with water-cooled TIG torches. But it also has an underlying message: how do we manage the associated risk?


For some unknown reason, the customers needing an urgent repair are mostly TIG torch users. Is it because they have so few problems with their torches? They are usually working on a rush job. When disaster strikes, leading to the discovery, there are no spare parts.

WaterCooledTIGDisasterOne of the disasters that can strike water-cooled TIG torches is frying the power cable. Someone is very busy and forgets to turn on the water. Or the hoses are incorrectly hooked up. Or the cable gets kinked. Or somehow a cart is sitting on the hose. Whatever; there’s never a good explanation.
Now there is no water circulating. Suddenly the cable is bursting off the torch – the welder is being sprayed by coolant – and most importantly, the job is coming to a screeching halt. This is when you find out who really cares about you.

The search for the replacement power cable usually starts with a phone call. The first question your going to be asked: what’s the model of the torch? There is no power cable that fits all water-cooled TIG torches. The TIG torch body’s connection to the power cable is going to vary by amperage and manufacturer.


Some manufacturers even have designed torches with specific cables for specific needs (e.g. tight spots or flexibility). If the torch is in stock, it’s matter of finding out how you want it delivered. But if it’s a unique torch, the cable might not arrive in hours but days.

But there is a simple way to avoid all this frustration and extra work…


CK has made a fuse block that can be put between the power adapter and power cable. If water is not present over the fuse link, it burns up around 6 amps. Things come to a halt but less dramatically. Once the culprit is identified and corrected, you replace the fuse. All of the above is avoided.

But even if you have an extra power cable, it’s still easier, faster and cheaper replacing the fuse. Replacing the power cable requires the TIG cable cover and fried power cable coming off.


Now imagine if you had a choice. Here’s the cost of your insurance policy: fuse block adapter ($80) and replacement fuses ($20 for 5). Now match that against your time to rectify things (don’t forget the courier bills if you want it in a hurry). Or the incorrect part you received because you weren’t sure of the model of TIG torch you had (true story).
